Artist Review: Prime – “Little Kid Small Town” EP

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

Every now and then you run into an artist that truly grabs your attention. One that has a signature sound that is dynamic, versatile and really stands out among the rest. Prime is definitely one of those rare cases with his EP Little Kid Small Town.

And there’s many reasons for it. One of the anchor things that makes this artist so effective is his authenticity from his charismatic vocal delivery. His pacing and flow is perfect for his style, and no matter what type of beat you utilize into a song, Prime holds his own and doesn’t need to emulate any other existing artist – his style is something truly within his own spectrum and can not be plagiarized.

Every track on Little Kid Small Town is vibrant and ambient, where consistency and production value parallel each other perfectly. The beats are crafty and combine a multifaceted mix of old school influential eras like the 90s, and mainstream sensibilities of some of today’s more prominent Hip Hop artists. It’s the perfect mix of yesterday and today, and makes Prime‘s future all the more promising with his eclectic approach.

The highlight of this EP is definitely “The 508 (feat. Shari)” which is a track that definitely has instant-classic status from beginning to end. It’s structured with clever hooks and rhyming techniques, and really avoids the all-too-often verse/chorus/verse/chorus/verse/chorus rush job. This song is well though out, both musically and lyrically. And truly has an endless set of likability factors, including the feature artist Shari who adds a blissful R&B-infused vocal track to tie it all together.

But like said before, the biggest components of this EP are two key ingredients: consistency and versatility. These are two things that are not always easy to combine, but Prime definitely pulls this off with ease. And that is a rare feat in almost any genre, especially Hip Hop.

Little Kid Small Town is definitely a gem, and is recommended for any avid Hip Hop listener no matter what superstars you currently listen to. At the rate Prime is going, he’ll be added to that list of superstars, and we wanna be here to see it happen.
