Artist Review: Bruja – “False Prophets” Album/EP

Review by: Justyn W. Brodsky

If you’re the type of music fanatic that digs contagiously catchy Rock-infused Blues with a plethora of grooves, then Bruja is the band for you. The Delray Beach, Florida-based quartet of solid musicians has been making some major noise in their scene since their formation with their solid signature sound and energetic live shows. And with the release of their six-track record “False Prophets”, which dropped November 1st in 2019, Bruja has raised the bar even higher not just for themselves, but for their scene as well.

From crunchy guitar swells, ambient keyboard textures, a dangerously groovy and punchy rhythm section all topped off with anthemic vocal melodies and top-of-the-line production value, “False Prophets” is a stroke of true genius. Bruja comes together nicely to bring a collection of solid grooves to the forefront of each track very effectively, but it’s also a record that showcases each member of the machine and the impact their individual musicianship brings to the table. With a strong start to the record with the song “Coming Down”, their elements of high energy are diligently in the mix with a great structure throughout the song’s duration. This song in particular has one of the strongest choruses the album offers and never drags out in any way. The dueling crunchy guitars with crybaby-wawa touches puts an atmosphere into Bruja‘s sound that is very visceral and versatile; making this track a more than solid opener.

One factor this album boasts is its ability to remain consistent while also giving each track a different approach to the overall execution. Every instrument/element stands out on this album on its own and would not be nearly as effective if one member were to be taken out of the equation; giving Bruja a chemistry that is perfectly mixed and meshed together. With hints of reggae in the mix, this band’s charismatic sound is not only cleverly executed, but also quenches your insatiable thirst to indulge in something with equal parts originality and familiarity; a modern take on yesterday’s iconic sound that has something for everyone. With album title track “False Prophets” and the instrumental “Check The Groove”, you can clearly hear the diversity this record offers and the clever song structuring in the songwriting process that Bruja brings forth as a unit. The album closer “Roots” is also a crucial standout in its own right with a blend of elements from every track that came before it; which ties it all together into one tastefully catchy record with all the Rock and Blues sweetness you could crave with more than enough groove to go around.

‘False Prophets‘ is a record with staying power, where you can keep coming back to these songs time and time again and love it every time. It sets the bar high for what Bruja has in store for their future releases. Regardless, you’ll be keeping up with them to see just how far they’ll go. And you’ll be glad you did.
