Exclusive Review: Defy The Tyrant – “Voices Pt. 1” EP

Review by: Justyn W. Brodsky

There is some serious talent emerging from the Tallahassee, FL music scene, but nothing quite like Defy The Tyrant, whom have created an unwavering buzz since their formation, and with the high anticipation of their upcoming EP ‘Bones’.

Anthemic, powerful and melody-driven vocals that top off a dynamically frantic energy, ‘Bones’ is a record that is designated to fulfill the insatiable hunger of all Rock fanatics that love a heavier and melodic edge to their listening experience. While Defy The Tyrant‘s sound completely stands on its own with an ambitious balance of originality and familiarity, combining a Nu-Metal, Hard Rock and Southern Rock influence, their sound also draws reminiscent qualities to other industry heavyweights in the game including Shinedown, Linkin Park, Three Days Grace and others of a similar caliber. Defy could easily fit on a tour schedule with any of those bands and could really raise the bar as well with the way they combine crucial elements between their songwriting structures and execution of their signature sound. Their title track “Bones” has ambient verses that compliment the ominously dark guitar textures and crafty rhythm section, all topped off with an in-your-face chorus that shares dueling surges of passionate screams and melodic vocals that are memorable and visceral in their projection.

“Tight Rope” is another track that follows a similar formula but goes out of its way to showcase new angles to Defy‘s overall sound. This charismatically anthemic song really grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go until you catch yourself getting lost in this song’s powerful melodies. And that’s one of the band’s strongest components – melody choices. The vocal textures and clever guitar progressions present a chemistry that is not only tasty, but contagious as well. These tracks musically scream for a solid mid-to-high range vocal approach, and this EP delivers this in full. You can easily hear the individual musicianship factors throughout each song’s duration, but once those vocals kick in, Defy The Tyrant completely transforms into a unit that is collective, distinctive, and authentic; and ‘Bones’ is the perfect EP to showcase the entirety of the machine.

“Bones” is slated for release on July 31st, and the feeling of anticipation is not only inevitable for the band’s fan base, but overwhelming as well. And if this is your first time discovering Defy The Tyrant, they could easily become one of your new favorite bands.
