Exclusive Review: Pop Smear – “Old & Gray” Single

If you’ve ever visited the boroughs and cityscapes of NYC, then you’ll definitely know just how versatile and eclectic the music scene is there, whether it be larger acts or indie collectives. So with dynamic electro-pop duo Pop Smear hailing from this musical holy grail haven, you can expect just about anything and everything all at once with their innovative, multifaceted and boldly fresh signature sound. With Australian vocalist Georgia Haege at the helm of the mic with blissfully anthemic vocals along with visceral, electronically-infused keyboard theatrics by Tom Oski who diligently ties it all together as the musical centerpiece, Pop Smear collectively delivers up an atmospheric aura that is melodic and a formulaic in its overall execution; bringing forth a brilliant sound of textures, edginess and a true sense of musicianship with their recent single “Old & Gray.”

With singer Georgia Haege garnering a plethora of experience over the years as a session guest musician for renowned artist names like Wheatus, Meatloaf and Shontelle, it’s no surprise that her angelic voice on this track is a complete standout of its own. She truly brings shine to the title’s track throughout every measure and brilliantly goes out of her way to reach new heights of catchiness, wittiness and unrelenting tractor beam-like fascination. She makes a solid connection between her voice and any listener within earshot; keeping you captivated throughout every lyrical twist and turn. But just to add more acclaim to Haege’s already-impressive presentation, she gained a lot of her stage experience (and film) from acting in numerous roles ranging from the lead role of Donna Sheridan in the North American Tour of the Broadway smash hit Mamma Mia! The melodically driven keys and electro-textures from the musical mind of Tom Oski truly brings out Pop Smear‘s edginess that touches on equal parts originality and familiarity; giving every listener something fresh yet still identifiable.

The chorus of this song is definitely a powerful one and really stays true to the traditional can’t-get-it-out-of-your-head formula. Both musicians contribute vital components to this song and no stone is left unturned by the time it ends. Pop Smear formed in 2011, but took an indefinite hiatus after the release of their debut album. But just like most successful endeavors, you can’t keep a good thing down; especially several years later when Pop Smear would make their eventual return with a handful of new futuristic and retro tracks; “Old & Gray” being one of them. A track that grooves with melody, versatility and everything in between that makes Pop Smear the dynamic duo they truly are with endless artistic merit.

“Old & Gray” will be releasing on December 11th and will be available on Spotify and several digital music streaming platforms.
