Artist Review: Tory and Tia

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

Two girls. Two voices. Twice the talent. And one hell of a presence.

With that being said, this dynamic duo needs no introduction. Their notoriety earned our praise long ago; and for more than good reason.

Tory and Tia are two eye-catching teenage sisters with a driven sound, personality, with vocal harmonies that only siblings could create. First thing very notable is their young age. These Pacific-Islanders have a very exotic look to their jazzy, vintage, fun-summer look and portray all the right elements that sisters should when grasping the music industry at such a young age–and are also the daughters of legendary Ukelele player Troy Fernandez; which gives the notion of music being in the family genes. The media even deemed them “Born to Perform” after an 8 and 10 year old Tory and Tia performed live for the first time. And this musical heritage can clearly be heard in their material.

Their track “So Solo” is a fun-filled song that could easily fit into any upbeat movie soundtrack, or any Hollywood-style foreground in need of something charismatic and ear-catchy. Though being a short song, this song gives a brilliant demonstration of what these ridiculously talented sisters can conjure up with their range of on-spot harmonization and fun-quirkiness making them even more worth your time. They also have a colorful Official Music Video for this song on YouTube you need to check out. Their personas are everything you expect plus more. This song will definitely sell you immediately. On October 26th, this song hit CHR and Top 40 Radio.

“Tell it to My Heart” shows another brilliant style to these girls. Swaying on the verge of a love song, but still has that same signature fun-loving feel and charisma shown by its predecessor. The production value perfectly fits the look and sound these songs give off, as well as the image both girls portray.

The girls are not playing any games here–after their family made a move to Los Angeles on behalf of the girls’ musical talent and visions, they have a powerhouse of Producers and Management making sure these girls shoot straight for super-stardom; including Johnny Vieira of J.V.M. and Qadree El Amin of Southpaw Entertainment, who helped guide the careers of Janet Jackson and Boyz II Men. With their talent combined with this team backing them, their shine in the business is inevitable–and has already been demonstrated. I personally can’t wait to see what the very near-future holds for these girls. Mahalo!

Artist Review: Ajia Clark

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

A range of vocals. A rage of emotions. And a dazzling treat for the soul.

Ajia Clark, a Grammy Member who made the 56th Grammy Ballet, brings back that tradition of soulful jazz with her song “Ooo La La”, which provides the clever introductory piano riffs and all.

The band behind her has a perfect toned-down texture where it not only showcases some of the best music theory without drowning out the vocals, but leaves every window open enough for Ajia to show that her range is not only broadened, but is used in a way where she could jump to any part of that gifted range altogether at any time, and quickly!

Her complimentary vocal multi-overdubs in this track also is placed in all the right spots to give it that overtone and swing that’s needed for a song like this. She has an Official Music Video for this song; you really need to watch it!

This same soulful jazzy sound consistently keeps things moving with her track “What Am I To Do”. A little more upbeat, and showcases the perfect blending of all the elements needed to tackle this genre along with the strengths of Ajia’s vocal range. So far from these two tracks alone, it’s no surprise she holds a Grammy Member title. I think it’s about time for her to win one.

Cool Fact: The studio console used on these tracks just happens to be the same console that conjured up Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.

Artist Review: Donica Knight

Review by: Justyn Brodsky

Beauty. Body. Soul. A little Rock and/or Roll. And a great shining presence in her Country style makes this upcoming Starlet quite the package deal.

With production value perfectly complimenting the strong, soulful voice that Donica boasts, it’s hard to find an imperfection in her single “Love Ain’t a Prize”. From the Western roots of solidified banjo-plucking to complimentary keyboard fills to never leave a stone unturned in every measure, you’re gonna hear not only one of the catchiest country singles you’ve heard anytime soon…but top-notch musicianship; making sure that Donica is showcased to her full potential. And this single proves that in every way.

The track also sustains an energy that not all country artists have nowadays. It has a force behind it that showcases some rock elements that makes this song even more fun than you’d expect out of your country expectations.

Donica may be a small town Alabama girl, but she has eyes set on big dreams and a thriving career, and has a resume’ that’s proving it with every move she’s making. She has toured relentlessly and has shared the stage with some superstars such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Styx, Kid Rock, Kenny Rogers, Skid Row, Hank Williams Jr., REO Speedwagon, 3 Doors Down, and many more.

Donica‘s music can also be heard on several TV/Radio commercials, and also on the award-winning Halloween Party Soundtrack. She has also worked with many acclaimed producers, such as the Grammy Nominated Mickey Jack Cones, Blake Mevis, and Rob Galbraith.

This Artist is definitely a stand-out of her class. Her sound is energetic and clever, her beauty is beautifully on par with her talent, vision, voice, and overall aura. She’s a name that is bound to be household soon enough. Her upcoming “Can’t Buy a Southern Girl” EP is slated for an early 2016 release; with a Music Video already set in motion for her “Love Ain’t a Prize” single. We highly anticipate what’s to come for Donica, and when you take a listen to her single, you will be too!
