Exclusive Artist Review: Dizmation – “Aves Nocturna: 1, 2 & 3” EP

Emerging from the musical landscapes of Dublin, Artist/Producer Dizmation continues to flourish throughout the Indie market with his distinctive and innovative signature sound. Known for his diligently detailed production techniques and multifaceted song structures, Dizmation throughout his career has put together several releases that showcase multiple angles of his skill sets which highlight his insatiably crafty production as well as performance value, and how strongly projecting how effectively they parallel each other. Now in 2021, with the recent release of his newest EP ‘Aves Nocturna: 1, 2 & 3’, Dizmation continues to raise the bar to reach new heights with his highly innovative structures and multi layered measures; proving that this is easily his best effort yet.

Structured into three interconnected chapters (1, 2 and 3), the ‘Aves Nocturna’ trilogy peels back many versatile layers as each track’s duration plays out. Part one, titled “To Owls”, starts out very rhythmic, atmospheric and effectively showcases well-executed melodies that have strong staying power. The first half of the 5+ minute runtime brings the listener on a hypnotically visceral journey into futuristic soundscapes and climactic buildups. The synth leads are very anthemic and really carry the torch throughout the song’s detailed structure, all while paralleling a rhythmic and progressive tempo with several percussive textures. The second half of this track brings every layer to the forefront along with an accompaniment of mid-to-high range vocal melodies, making their highly regarded first appearance on the record. These vocal parts are not only brilliantly written, but the composition itself at this stage of the song brings a sense of subtlety that really highlights Dismation’s songwriting ability. Overall, Part One really sets the tone for the rest of the EP and strongly grabs your undivided attention.

Part Two of the ‘Aves Nocturna’ trilogy, titled “To A Distant Star”, blends an atmospheric piano progression with a synth/string lead alongside textures of acoustic guitars, percussion additives and a smooth, punchy baseline that ties the structure together. This song’s aura is very dreamlike in the first half, then eventually cruises into an energetically uptempo climax that is also accompanied by high range vocal melodies. This song showcases a brilliant demonstration of continuity and continues to highlight several angles of Dizmation’s performance and production value.

Part three, titled “We Live Here”, operates a little more like a progressively Indie ballad, but with a more anthemic approach. The half-time tempo in the verses blend diligently with the uptempo chorus and really shines light on the melody-driven chord progressions as well as dynamically layered rhythm section. This track in particular brings the entirety of Dizmation’s signature sound to the forefront full circle, tying together the trilogy in a way that is effective and impressionable for anyone listening to his music perhaps for the first time. All three songs on this trilogy play equally vital roles and strongly demonstrate the multifaceted angles of talent that went into them. It’s a record that truly showcases Dizmation’s musical vision and keeps the listener strongly engaged and invested from beginning to end. The EP is available exclusively on BandCamp and will easily become one of your favorites of 2021.

Exclusive Artist Review: Equal Frequencies – “Karma” Album/LP

Hailing from Huddersfield in the landscapes of the UK, husband and wife duo Equal Frequencies have been hitting the ground running in the music realm for over 20 years and have collaborated on countless bands and projects. With the success and critical acclaim of their previous two albums, their third effort ‘Karma’ is easily their best yet and really showcases the duo’s musicianship factors and versatile artistic merit.

Known for their controversial lyrics, progressive Indie/Jazz signature sound and atmospheric song structures, Equal Frequencies have put together a record that is multifaceted, multi layered and hypnotically ambient with their tasteful blend of electronically infused Pop, Indie, World Fusion and Hip Hop elements. Comprised of eleven powerful and wholesome tracks, this soundtrack-worthy effort has a plethora of soundscapes that truly stand out among today’s contemporary artists from a similar calibre. Opening title track “Karma” is very rhythmic and really sets the tone for the rest of the album’s duration in a way that is cohesive and effective. You can immediately hear the melodic coherence emanating from each lead instrument while the climactic buildup throughout the measures are cleverly executed and finely tuned. It’s a solid strong first impression that will garner your undivided attention. Follow-up song “Is This How You Want It To Be” captures the same ambience and atmosphere but introduces the melody-driven vocals and crafty lyrics with a more progressive guitar progression. This track really showcases the duo’s production value very effectively and really brings the songwriting factors to the forefront. The vocals are intelligent, intellectual and thought provoking, giving the listener a more visceral listening experience and message that perfectly parallels the melodic measures throughout the song’s duration.

Another notable track on this record is “Dystopia”, another rhythmically progressive song that showcases strong vocal melodies and guitar leads. The more driven tempo really carries the rhythm section on every measure and enhances all the melodic leads in all the right places. The pacing is more carefully written and you can hear the attentiveness to detail is made very apparent. And lastly, closing track “Land Of My Dreams” is very anthemic and brilliantly blends cohesive elements of progressive Hip Hop and Indie Jazz with a Pop sensibility. The piano landscape is beautifully written and really sustains the atmospheric aura that this album passionately displays. The dynamic Hip Hop tempo blends with the melodic layers and this song in particular really showcases Equal Frequencies from several angles. It balances originality and familiarity quite strongly and doesn’t outdo itself in any way. It goes out on a high note and closes out the album with a signature touch that’ll have you doing a deep dive into the Equal Frequencies discography.

‘Karma’ is well ahead of its time and really grabs your attention both musically and lyrically. Both musicians contribute almost intimidatingly strong musicianship factors and the overall production value is something far above the industry standard for an indie release. It’s an intelligent record that’ll make it quite difficult to pick a favorite song from. The album released on June 26th and is currently available on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and several other digital music streaming platforms. We can’t recommend this one highly enough.

Exclusive Artist Review: Brave Magnetic – “The Shape Of Things To Come” & “You Are The One” Singles

Brave Magnetic is a solo Indie project conjured from the talented mind of Matt Crowley, a member from the band Union City whom are based in the Peterborough area of Ontario. Utilizing a crafty and surreal signature sound that is multi layered and multifaceted, Crowley truly brings a feel-good ambience into this solo project and so far has received quite the positive reception since bringing it to fruition even after only a few singles and a small EP.

This year in 2021, Brave Magnetic has put out two very diligent and cohesive singles that share a reminiscence to artists that have a similar calibre to The Cure and Copeland. The first single, “The Shape Of Things To Come” is a soul-soother that integrates facets of piano, effective chord progressions, transitions, strings, acoustic guitars and several other layered components with many dreamlike additives. The clean guitar melody on this track really helps enhance the overall progression and when all the ingredients are combined, a tasty and beautifully executed track is born. Crowley’s very anthemic and emotional vocal melodies truly carry the torch on this song and really utilizes the raw passion and emotion that this heard through every measure. It’s a very visceral listening experience.

His second single off his catalogue is “You Are The One”. A more rhythmic track with more of an ominous presence, but not mysterious by any means. The rotund low end bass progression leaves room for Crowley to really shine with his vocal melodies on this track – and he absolutely does. His octave overdubbed vocals are very appropriately placed along with his strong harmonies, and the keyboard additives lend inventive textures to the vocals that are not only well placed, but diligently mixed as well. There are spacey production techniques utilized in this song that really enhance the mix, and even though this is a shorter song than its predecessor, it’s just as effective. This dreamlike single is climactic, but also has a buildup that truly demonstrates the attentiveness to detail that is absolutely brilliant.

These two singles will definitely entice anyone to dive deeper into the Brave Magnetic catalogue and really showcases just how advanced Matt Crowley’s songwriting really is. He is an artist you really need to keep a close eye on. You can hear both singles on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and several other digital music streaming platforms. You’ll be glad you did.

Exclusive Artist Interview: Jeremy Gorman

San Francisco’s rising artist Jeremy Gorman so far in 2021 has been undoubtedly making some prominent and crucial moves with his career – from the insatiable buzz manifesting from the recent release of his acclaimed new anthemic single “Brave Enough To Be” as well as the high anticipation surrounding his upcoming sophomore album, Gorman has successfully captured the undivided attention of both old fans and fresh listeners alike; continuing to showcase his distinctively catchy signature sound that diligently balances equal parts originality and familiarity. As he continues to hit the ground running, we got the chance to sit down with him for a comprehensive interview to get the inside scoop on Gorman’s past, present, and the prospects of his promising future and beyond.

How long have you been active under your current artist name?

Though I’ve been an active artist for the last forty years, I’ve only been a solo artist since 2020 with the debut of my first album “…Another Day”

What music scene/city do you currently represent?

I live, work and perform in the North Bay Area, Sonoma County specifically. That said, I have performed all over the San Francisco Bay Area and my livestream has a global reach, with regular viewers throughout Europe in particular.

The pandemic has really thrown a wrench into the live music experience and for artists altogether. How has it affected you and your career?

It’s been really tough this last year, not being able to perform in-person. The relationship between an artist and an audience is why we do this and there’s just no substitute for the energy created in that moment. In 2020, I started doing a monthly livestream to keep the connection going and expand my reach. As it happens though, I just had my first in-person performance last week since the pandemic, and it was so exhilarating to be with my fans again!

What are some of your music influences?

My influences are varied and growing all the time. I grew up on the Beatles and early British Invasion bands, but my parents were always listening to jazz and classical music, so that’s very much a part of my musical DNA. My first passion is guitar, so I am very influenced by Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton, though I started playing professionally in the days of Eddie Van Halen and Neil Schon, so that’s in there too! As a songwriter I’m more influenced by storytellers, Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, Jason Isbell among others. But if you look at my material, it can be hard to pin down sometimes as I’ve covered a lot of different genres!

What kind of concepts do you tend to write about as an artist? Shine some light on that.

There’s an old saying… “write what you know” and I have certainly done that, in songs like ‘Another Day’ about finding hope in the midst of the pandemic, or ‘Brave Enough To Be’ as a response to Amanda Gorman’s inaugural poem The Hill We Climb. But I look at my songs as “mini novels”, so I may write about the death of a conflicted protagonist in ‘Kings Get Broken’ or Sam the Hobbit from Lord of the Rings in ‘Sam’s Lament.’ I can be political at times as well, such as in my song ‘Reckoning’.

When is your next release coming out?

I just released ‘Brave Enough To Be’ on April 16th of this year and that will be part of my second album, coming out in November 2021! I’ve got about 2/3 of the album written and recorded, so I’m right on track!

What’s in store for you in 2021? Give us the goods.

Well… 2021 is going to be an interesting year.. there’s a lot still unknown about what “normal” will be, but here’s what I’ve got going so far. A new album in November, a recurring livestream the 2nd Friday of every month, more live shows in the North Bay and I’m producing albums for others as well! In addition to be an artist myself, I am also a recording engineer and producer, so I’ll be busy!!
