Exclusive Artist Review: Era’nay – “Elevate” EP

EP Cover Art

In today’s overwhelmingly convoluted music industry, not many artists can truly deliver a signature sound and aura that encapsulates the R&B and Soul atmosphere quite like Louisville’s current rising starlet Era’nay. An artist that has been hitting the ground running since her soul soothing voice began gracing the musical landscape with her natural talent, persona, and knack of writing diligently crafted songs that brilliantly balance equal parts originality and familiarity; boasting an authentic style that successfully touches on today’s more modern sensibility as well as yesterday’s nostalgic R&B/Soul eras that have helped garner the impactful genre it is today.

Drawing reminiscence to industry notables like Toni Braxton and Patti Labelle, Era’nay’s songs also preserve a classic sound that almost any avid fan of the world of R&B can resonate with, and we get a deep dive into this musical aura with her most recent EP ‘Elevate’. An anthemic collection of six tracks that truly encompass Era’nay’s authenticity, gifted songwriting/melody structures, ability as a naturally gifted vocalist, and even her vulnerability as an artist – in only the best possibly ways. Opening tracks on this record are “Waiting For” and “In My Feelings (feat. T. Real & Darrin Lee Jr.)”. Both are hypnotic and feel like the best musical back rub you’ve received in decades; and especially sets the tone for what the rest of the record brings. Era’nay’s vocal delivery especially is beautifully subtle in all the right places and really showcases her ability to construct a very powerful, integrative lead melody that is memorable, catchy and leaves you with a visceral listening experience.

Moving onto one of her anchor singles of the EP, her song “Lesson” is a little more upbeat, bluesy and explores a bit more into the facets of her vocal range and musical persona. The Rhodes keys riff on this track from the very beginning is insatiably enticing and really delves into the musicianship factors that brilliantly parallel with the above-average production value. It’s a great demonstration of hearing how Era’nay can integrate her signature style into different musical atmospheres that cover more angles of her artistic merit. This one, just like the previous tracks on this EP, really add to the diversity aspect when it comes to composing effective vocal melodies regardless how much the music can tend to change or shift over.

Lastly, her closing track “Farewell”, which was also released as a single prior to the full EP release, reiterates back to the record’s beginnings with this track’s hypnotic aura. It closes the record with the same modernly nostalgic measures that set the tone for the record in the first place. It’s a brilliant ending to the record that reconnects with the EP’s beginning where it started it all; giving the audience a taste of something fresh yet still identifiable. Overall, Era’nay has served up a six-track hypnotic record that has so far amassed an insatiable presence and reception. It’s a true high-quality record with unquestionably above average production value which has helped create the visceral listening experience that ‘Elevate’ has brought to the table since its release date. It’s a must-hear on just about every account and will leave you with that musical feeling of warmth which has become relatively scarce in today’s modern music realm.

‘Elevate’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music , iTunes and several other digital music streaming platforms. You’ll be beyond happy you gave her a listen.

Exclusive Artist Review: Ruben Gausel Torkelsen & Jessica Chertock – “Rebound” Single

It’s rare that you find a collaborative gem like “Rebound”, an ambient and hypnotic new single from Norway’s EDM pioneer Ruben Gausel Torkelsen and NYC-based vocalist Jessica Chertock. While both artists completely hone their own versatile crafts that are a standout of their calibre, this track’s collaboration efforts between the two prominent artists truly encompass a type of musical magic that is scarce in today’s modern music realm – and “Rebound” really spotlights this sentiment in several crucial ways.

This hypnotically atmospheric EDM/Pop effort not only showcases both artists most effectively, but also provides a visceral listening experience to just about anyone that comes into contact with this song. Comprised of melodically structured EDM measures that bring forth a nostalgically blissful approach, the verses explore a vast array of emotions with Jessica’s tender vocals that really draw you in from the onset. Ruben’s attentiveness to detail in this song especially gives her the free reign to structure together a lyrical style that really aims for the soul and the musical centerpiece that harbors within all of us as listeners. The chorus is brilliantly anthemic and hits really hard after the verses build up to the moment it starts. Not only are the vocals captivatingly ambient, but the song structure gives every lyrical measure the necessary strength to be hypnotic, clever and with a wholesomeness that is original but still familiar among other industry greats that have used similar formulas. But overall, the melody choices between the song structure, vocals and musicianship factors that compliment the artists’ artistic merit – “Rebound” is a track that utilizes melody choices with the ability to truly captivate positive emotional responses from today’s music listener’s in ways they may or may not have felt before. It’s like a honeymoon phase that never comes to an end – and the feeling stays with you forever.

This song also has that undeniable staying power, the power to stay with you even after it’s over. This is also the type of track that’ll have you doing a deeper dive into both artists’ careers and discography. It has top notch production value, artistic authenticity and that ambience that truly gives this song an aura that is simply unforgettable. “Rebound” truly sets the bar high for both Ruben and Jessica as prominent rising artists. But we have a feeling they have even better tricks up their sleeves when the time comes for their subsequent releases. You can listen to “Rebound” now on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and several other digital music streaming platforms. You’ll be beyond fortunate that you did.

Exclusive Artist Review: Rootspence & The Groove Makers – “Judgement Day” LP

Now here’s a group you’ll rarely discover in your lifetime. A band of versatility, nostalgia and unwavering talent that showcases multiple angles of their signature stylization, Rootspence & The Groove Makers are a seven-member Mozambican powerhouse tackling their own crossbreed of Reggae/Pop/R&B and Fusion; done in a way that is both multilayered and multifaceted. And if this description entices you, then you will lovingly feel the bliss of this group’s musical power with the fruition of their latest 8-track juggernaut Judgement Day.

With their formation setting its groundwork in 2015 by Helio “Rootspence” Sixpence (vocalist/frontman) in Maputo, Mozambique, The Groove Makers quickly began hitting the ground running and have no intention of stopping anytime soon. The Groove Makers are very well known for their jazzy, African-guitar style and pop approach to reggae featuring live musical instruments. The fusion imprint results from the diverse rhythmic mastery from the band members, entailing Hard Rock, Gospel, Afro-fusion, Kizomba, Jazz and Hip-hop. And when you put this multi-genre concoction together, you get Judgement Day. Eight songs with top notch production and performance value with more layers and hooks to go around. With undeniably catchy choruses embracing every track, it’s songs like “Everything”, “My Heart” and “Beautiful Smile” that truly give The Groove Makers the staying power; the power to stay with you even after the song is over, because you’ll be getting these choruses completely stuck in your head with no escape.

The musicianship factors are completely off the charts with this album. With smooth bass lines, a tight-knit rhythm section with soulful anthemic vocal energy and every other additive each member brings to the table, Judgement Day simply is a record of not just pure talent, but perfectionism too. Every nook and cranny is covered, and with slick guitar progressions and stylistic keyboard parts with on-the-mark backup vocals, Judgement Day also proves that the band is fully comprised of not just top of the line musicians, but principal songwriters as well. Whether it’s on a cruise ship or stadium, The Groove Makers have put together a wholesome sound that never leaves a stone unturned, and that’s exactly what is comprised on Judgment Day.

Throughout their five year career, the band has already acquired a vast array of accomplishments including a 2020 WAM Award Nominee (Best Reggae Music), 7 Times Reverb Nation Featured Artist, Selected for Global Home Music Fest, SongDew TV, Brews Radio, and several others. Rootspence & The Groove Makers are one of those bands you become stoked about after discovering them. And after you take a listen to Judgment Day yourself, you’ll see (and hear) exactly why. The album is currently available on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and several other digital music streaming platforms.

For Roots the most rewording thing in the word is “that feeling, you know… when you look deep into someone’s eyes and you just feel great… you don’t care about what you lost because you believe sharing, giving and mending souls is just the right and greatest thing to do”. Baptized Roots as translation of his reasoning style. Paradoxically idealist and man with feet on the ground, he advocates love, respect, compassion, harmony, equality and peace. -Rootspence
