Album Review: Goodbye Silence – Thoughts In Boxes LP

This band is truly a breath of fresh air, and takes me back to a realm where spicey guitar riffs, a punchy rhythm section, and catchy vocal melodies were the key to great songwriting, and strong likability from the first listen. This Oregon based group has just that–those defining factors from the glory days of 90s Rock, Alternative, and elements of everything else you loved about that time period.

Alt/Rockers, Goodbye Silence, with their LP Thoughts In Boxes do exactly what I described above. They put together a collection of dynamically written, riffy, and undeniable catchy tunes that is bound to draw in all ears that come by this record. 

First thing I noticed whenever a new song started was how amazingly crafty the band is. You never hear the same track twice. Each one offers up different measures of tempo changes, riff dynamics, and vocal structures that explore a very gifted, charismatic, and nose to the grindstone vocal melodies with witty characteristics to show that this vocalist isn’t messing around. 

Album opener “Like An Ocean” starts things out great with great guitar tones that really bring out the energy in the vocal melodies, while the pounding rhythm section ties everything together. And this rhythm section has one powerful thing going for them that makes their role in the band most crucial–precision. The smooth bass lines and hard hitting drum chops really solidify this band’s energy and it’s made apparent from the very beginning.

Moving onto title track “Thoughts In Boxes”, we have an excellent ambient guitar picking riff that parallels drumstick rim shots. A fun intro that leads into a powerful yet familiar guitar progression that not only works, but has a great vocal melody to put differentiation to any other song that may use this progression. And it gets more powerful as it cruises on. Most amazing part is this song sounds almost nothing like its predecessing track, but you can tell it’s still coming from the same band.

Onto my personal favorite, “Long Gone”. This song to me has it all. Insatiable song structure, the best vocal usage thus far (both melody and lyrics), and has that feel of a hit song straight from the 90s, but also sustains staying power by integrating today’s rock sensibility. This song is very guitar-driven, and the vocal melodies are as memorable as they can get. This one takes first prize to me in every way.

Throughout this album, you hear influences from some of your favorite rockers from yesterday and today. I hear a lot of Chris Cornell-ish vocal melodies and range, but still very much original and raw with lovable charisma. You hear a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers influence in some of the riffs, but strictly just as an influence, because these riffs offer up something new and dynamic in every track. 
In Thoughts In Boxes, one thing that makes this album the gem that it is: there’s something for everyone. And like stated before, you get something new in every track. There’s nothing repetitive, everything is tight and precise, and this is definitely an album you can blast in your car quite often. It definitely belongs on your shelf of favorites. And one last thing…how genuine this band is. No post-production theatrics, no EDM-doused “experimentation” or pretentious nonsense; just a terrific Rock album you’ll be more than stoked you discovered. This band keeps it totally real, and that’s one of the best characteristics they portray. I couldn’t praise this album enough.
