Exclusive Review: Snailmate – “I Know What You Want” Single

Review by: Justyn W. Brodsky

When it comes to dynamic duo Snailmate, it’s all about the energy and insatiable desire to share their unique sound with the world. Comprised of Kalen Lander (Synth/Vocals) and Bentley Monet (Drums/Vocals), this Arizona-based band has relentlessly toured Europe, Japan, and spends 6 months out of the year touring the US for the last 5 years. Since then, Snailmate has been hitting the ground running and has no intention of stopping, and they are currently extending their buzz with their newest single “I Know What You Want”.

Combining a fury of well placed synth parts, dual punk and rap-oriented vocals with measures of theatrical touches, this single is equally fun as it is technical and tightly knit. The vocals are spit quickly and effectively, putting a brilliant genre bend to their electronically-infused signature sound. Meanwhile the drums are super punchy, full of fun fills and cover all angles despite any lack of guitar. The track is bassy, attention grabbing, and versatile in its overall execution.

If anyone grew up in the 90’s scene, then you might remember Atom and His Package. While Snailmate‘s sound is very different, they give a great callback, or perhaps reminder of Atom. But either way, can be appreciated all the same. One thing you can definitely hear is Snailmate having a mess load of fun, and is definitely a must-see when they jump back on tour after this COVID19 pandemic subsides. But until then, you really need to take a listen to “I Know What You Want” and get to know this band. Their music is available all over the place and their multifaceted and energetic sound will be your new addiction.
